5/18/10 Busy morning for Fleetwood area rescuers included impalement crash:
Three rescue companies worked for about an hour to free a driver from his tractor
trailer rig Tuesday morning along State route 222.
Traffic was snarled just before
0400 am. First arriving officers from Fleetwood, Walnuttown, and Virginville found
a mini van heavily damaged with it's occupant out of the vehicle, and a tractor trailer
wrapped in chain link fence in front of Penn Detroit Diesel. Once the chain link
fence was cut away and access to the driver was made, rescuers were faced with yet
another issue, the driver was impaled through the windshield with a pipe from the
chain link fence. Within another 45 minutes, Fleetwood Paramedic Josh High stabilized
the driver enough so that rescuers were able to make three cuts on the pipe to get
it short enough so the driver could be removed from the truck. "The driver was able
to talk to rescuers during the one hour extrication and was almost able to remove
himself from the truck once the pipe was cut" said John Manmiller Chief from Fleetwood.
The 12 inches of pipe that remained was wrapped and secured so movement was kept
to a minimum and further injury was avoided. The driver was transported to the trauma
team at the Reading Hospital.
Traffic was heavy during the am rush to area schools and to East Penn Manufacturing.
Fleetwood Borough was bumper to bumper as well as all the side roads throughout the
day. Penn Dot and Met-Ed relieved Fire Police at main intersections with arrow
signs
and personnel to direct traffic. Power was out along 222 from Richmond to Maidencreek
townships.
At 0730 am the same companies were dispatched to another accident on SR-662 and Eagle Rd in Richmond township. Fleetwood EMS transported 2 patients from that incident. Then at ~ 2100 hrs, Fleetwood assisted Lyons with a two vehicle MVA. The following day Fleetwood assisted Ruscombmanor at a possible structure fire on 662. Arriving units extinguished a stove fire and used smoke ejectors to ventilate the structure.
